Session Descriptions

Program Specific Enhancement Training
The three-day Program Specific Enhancement Training is only available to current enhancement schools who have new teachers, coaches, or principals who have not previously participated in the training and/or for those teachers who have previously participated in the training and would like to refresh their skills. The focus of these sessions will be on reading research, organization of the teacher's manuals, phonemic awareness (grades K-1 only), phonics, fluency, and assessment. Participants must attend all three days.

Intervention Program Training

Horizons (Levels A & B):
This three-day session focuses on teaching beginning reading skills using Horizons A and B, including the Fast Track Level A/B. Participants will learn the basic information and skills needed to implement these programs - placement, grouping, and presentation skills. Additional emphasis on teaching to mastery, acceleration, re-teaching, correction procedures, and using in-program assessments to inform instruction is planned. Participants will learn and practice presentation techniques for word attack/decoding, story reading, comprehension activities, and independent work. Supplemental materials will also be shared. Participants must attend all three days.

Reading Mastery First Level Training:
This two-day session will focus on teaching beginning reading skills using Reading Mastery 1 and Reading Mastery Signatures (Grade K). Participants will learn the basic information and skills needed to implement these programs - pacing, acceleration, scheduling, grouping, and presenting lessons to students who are not yet readers.

Reading Mastery Second Level Training:
This one-day session will focus on teaching beginning reading skills using Reading Mastery 2 and Reading Mastery Signatures (Grade 1). Participants will learn and practice presentation techniques for word attack, story reading, comprehension activities, and independent work. This session will also cover scheduling, grouping, placement, and acceleration.

K-PALS (Kindergarten Peer Assisted Learning Strategies):
In this one and a half-day session participants will learn to implement PALS for kindergarten, a field-tested, teacher-friendly, inexpensive reading-readiness program. K-PALS promotes sound-play (phonological awareness), sound-letter correspondence, basic decoding skills, as well as basic sight words.
Following a brief presentation summarizing research findings, presenters will provide hands-on practice of all PALS activities, including a simulation of a PALS classroom during training, teacher-directed lessons, and peer-mediated practice. Participants will receive stuent practice materials that include samples of the activity worksheets. Presenters will role-play as PALS teachers and participants will practice PALS as classroom students.

Read Well I:
Read Well is an engaging, research-based, primary reading curriculum designed to meet the needs of Tier 1, 2, and 3 students in grades K-3. Read Well is infused with themed topics to capture the imagination of children in a productive and meaningful way. The programming consists of both whole group and small group components that cover the big five skill sets of literacy.

Early Reading Intervention (ERI):
This one-day session is designed for kindergarten teachers and coaches who will be supporting teachers implementing ERI. ERI is a supplemental intervention program designed for kindergarten children who need early, intensive intervention in phonological awareness, letter names, letter sounds, word reading, spelling, and simple-sentence reading. Participants will learn how to organize materials and implement the program.

Assessment Training

DIBELS Next Transition Training:
This one-day training is open to participants who have already been using DIBELS in their school. In addition to training on the new and revised measures included in the recent release of DIBELS Next, participants will also learn about the new changes coming to the DIBELS Data System, including timelines and suggestions for transitioning from DIBELS 6th edition (revised) to DIBELS Next.
